Some 150 yards to the west of the Old Vic is the Young Vic, which was founded by Frank Dunlop under the wing of the National Theatre in 1970. The architectural practice of Howell, Killick, Partridge and Amis - on the face of It an unusual choice, associated as It was with London County Council housing and various Cambridge colleges - was commissioned to design this rather unconventional theatre for young adults; and, mainly from the drawing board of William Gough Howell, there emerged an Inspired low-budget solution.
A bombslte facing Short Street and terraces of red-brick shops and flats of about 1900 was selected as the location, and It was decided to retain one three-storey 19th-century house, with Its bungalow shop, within the site. Thus Wilson Bros, 66 The Cut, became the main entrance foyer to the complex, with its attractive green and white patterned wall tiling. To the right of No. 66 the chamfered auditorium block was added, providing a 24-foot high flexible space for dance or conventional drama, and to the left a studio with café, all contained within a raw concrete-block shell. Access to storage and workshops is from the rear in Cons Street.
Dame Sybil Thorndike opened the theatre on 11 December 1970, with Frank Dunlop directing an adaptation of Mollere’s The Cheats of Scapino. Since that time a wide variety of plays have been successfully performed, including The Taming of the Shrew, Waiting For Godot, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and French Without Tears. The theatre Is now Independent, with its own board of management.

Established by John Studzinski 15 years ago, the Genesis Foundation works in partnership with the leaders of prestigious UK arts organisations such as the Royal Court, The Sixteen, Welsh National Opera and the Young Vic. Its largest funding commitment is to programmes that support directors, playwrights and musicians in the early stages of their professional lives.

In addition it awards scholarships to exceptional student actors at LAMDA and commissions stimulating new works, from choral compositions to light installations.

It had been updated to the 1940s, with film sequences of Annie getting medals from Churchill, Hitler and Stalin; it had been re-scored for four upright pianos; the “I’m an Indian Too” number had been cut; and the design included a kind of conveyor-belt, moving model water-towers, cactus plants and telegraph poles along (“like the one used for prizes in The Generation Game”). For some, Richard Jones’s production was brilliant, witty, startlingly revisionist and exciting. For others, “Jones is a theatrical show-off who feels the need to put his own personal and often malodorous mark on everything he directs, like a dog urinating on lampposts” (D. Telegraph). “Critics, get your blunderbuss” was the majority view of the direction, though everyone thought Julian Ovenden was the best-ever Frank Butler, most people loved Jane Horrocks’s Annie, and everyone recognised the succession of hit- songs as one of the great all-time Broadway scores.  (plus)

Commentaire: This first revival was greeted more enthusiastically than the ENO production - possibly the passing of twenty years and the development of more serious and challenging musicals in the intervening period made it easier to accept that Kurt Weill was writing ahead of his time.  (plus)

Commentaire: The basic story - will Jesse Simple succeed in raising the dosh for a divorce from his ex-wife so he can marry the loyal and loving Joyce - or will he be tempted from the straight and narrow by the vamping barmaid Zarita? - was considered just as weak as when the show was first produced in London 45 years earlier. Once again, it was the choreography and sheer energy of the performers that made it work.  (plus)

Commentaire: This was clearly an attempt to create another “Joseph” - a show with a large children’s chorus suitable for schools and youth productions. However, something went wrong at the last minute and licences for the children were refused, accordingly the show went ahead with adults only. In 1985 a new and revised version called “Swan Esther and the King” was created and toured under the management of Bill Kenwright.  (plus)
